- ABOUT DYSPROSIUM -
Awarded the APRA Songwriting Award at Push Over 2004
Winners of The Push Eastern Regional Finals, Oct. 2003
Dysprosium is a 5-piece melodic metal band based in the inner-eastern suburbs of
Melbourne. They have been playing for over four years & developed an
original style with big keyboard sounds, a strong rhythm
section, melodic lead guitars, and with harmonic / death vocal styles.
What the judges said:
“I
don’t think I’ve heard such a good Victorian
death-metal
band…
…(they)
have their own original sound in a tough genre…
…excellent
musicianship all round…
…awesome
show, great stage presence…these guys rock!”
MULLET (Matt) – Guitars, vocals - 22, tall bastard, curly hair, evil mongrel on stage. Fave bands: opeth, bloodbath, tool.
DAVE – Guitars, vocals - 22, shortarse, long brown hair, metal as fuck. Dave's into crazy gothic and black metal. Cold shit man.
TIM – Keyboards - 22, spiky black hair, trained for classical, now using his powers purely for evil...
HARN – Bass - 21, tall dude with black hair and a negative attitude. Such a shame to see a young man turn so bad.
STEG (Brendan) – Drums, vocals - 22, blond hair, another tall bastard muso in a black Opeth t-shirt.

- NEWS -
March 05
Gig coming up this friday night (18th March): 'Devil's Playground', Glen Waverly community centre, put on by the Monash council and Freeza. We'll be pulling out some brand new tunes at this gig & hope we don't stuff it up! Check the details in the gig guide below. We'll be handing out special little passes at the door so you can get in a bit cheaper.
November 04
Drum tracks for a new set of recordings are being done over these few weeks, with some really nice mics on loan and some new multitrack gear (which fucks up every now and then but she'll be right). This will be a chance for us to release a good collection of our old stuff for the archives, and get started on the new material. We're also recording a song to be used on the soundtrack of a new short film called PRIVATEi, which will be entered in the Tropfest film festival early '05. We're pretty excited about being involved with this, and it's a new avenue of exposure that we wouldn't have thought of. Best of luck to Tim Jessel with the making of the film, hope it all goes well.
August 04
MULLET has returned from the mighty kingdom of China bearing many scars, stories and tea. Now it's back to the front for Dyspros with our first assault on Club Evolution in Prahran! Launchpad 2004 is on and we'll be showing them how it's done on the 'metal / sorta-like-system-of-a-down' band night. We are on at around 11:30 (although this may change so rock up early), entry is ten bucks and drinks are cheap.
Announcing the arrival of Harn on Bass guitar! Harn has been one of the boys since the very beginning, and also plays bass for street-punk band The Worst (check out www.theworst.live.com.au) He'll be bustin out the fundamentals at the Launchpad gig.
July 04
The Push Start DVD has arrived and it's pretty good! Without much preamble there's one song and an interview from each band. Dyspros are up first playing 'New world'. Sound is alright, pictures are great. Hopefully we can include this in a new CD/DVD demo release, but that depends on copyright etc. which we'll have to find out about. Stay tuned for more info.
Sadly our time with bass player Josh Bridges has come to an end. He's an awesome player and all-round dude & we wish him the best of luck with his musical endeavours & with the Sunny Hawkins Band who by all accounts are kickin ass. Thanks dude for playing with us - you really made us raise the bar & helped us get the band on its feet.
The photos link now works, & you can check out some pics from our dark hour at Luna Park. The mp3 link will refer to our mp3.com site once it's properly set-up.
Easter 04
DYSPROSIUM are featured in this week's Progress Press local newspaper (13/04/04). Anyone living in the Balwyn & surrounding area - check it out. Below is a summary of the judges' comments from Push Over 2004- thanks to Dave Rose for compiling those for us.
JUDGES' COMMENTS - PUSH OVER '04
The Judging panel for the Push Start grand final consisted of:
PRESENTATION:
Great personalities. All look suitably evil.
The band looked great and handled themselves very well. Certainly had the crowd’s attention. Very professional.
Very high level of musicianship. Very Good.
Tight playing, strong vocals. Funny between-song banter.
Good players... Excellent guitar work...
Really impressive musicianship... Great drummer.
COMPOSITION:
Strong melodies. Interesting arrangements. Intelligent songs
Good songwriting. I can hear how much work the band has put into the tunes.
Good metal songs.
Really nice changes, instrumental breaks and riffs. Left plenty of space when needed. Really nice.
Would get airplay on niche programs i.e. metal shows. Very ready for the studio.
I think the band is ready to record. Not sure if mainstream radio stations would play the music but that doesn’t matter.
Seem ready to record...Could do well in a studio.
Keep writing songs. Definite potential.
April 04
Welcome to the new DYSPROSIUM website. We are currently finalising mp3 links and organising the photos page, but for now the rest of the site is up and running. We want to say a big thanks to everyone who came to see us at Push Over - we had an awesome time and it's been great to get such good feedback from people. We've just received the summary of judges' comments, so we'll post some of those for all to see! Also from The Push will be the DVD of the day produced by RMITV - stay tuned for more info on that one. News with the band - Mullet is back to the grindstone in China for a couple more months, so the rest of the guys are meeting regularly to work on new material & start the groundwork for a new CD... Unfortunately there won't be any gigs for a little while, but keep an eye on the gig section below for the much-awaited comeback tour later in the year. Join the mailing list to receive emails when you can catch the band in action.
A big shout out to everyone who saw Opeth at the corner the other week!
